Profile snapshot Tanzania, Vendor, Manufacturing and value addition Lucy Achieng’ Odiwa is a leading Menstrual Health Management (MHM) Advocate, SRHR Activist, and social entrepreneur in Tanzania. She is the Co-Founder and CEO of WomenChoice Industries, a social enterprise established in Tanga that manufactures and distributes affordable, reusable sanitary towels branded “Salama Pads.”These locally made, durable pads provide a low-cost, eco-friendly solution to period poverty for girls and women in low-resource communities. Through her enterprise, Lucy also trains and empowers disadvantaged women as community vendors, enabling them to earn sustainable income while increasing access to menstrual products. A passionate advocate against menstrual stigma and taboos, her work has significantly reduced school absenteeism among girls and addressed related health and social risks. Lucy holds a Diploma in Clinical Medicine and a Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences (Public Administration). She currently serves as Chairperson of the Tanga Platform of Menstrual Health Management. Her notable achievements include winning 1st Place in the 2018 Global SDGs and Her Competition, recognition in the SDSN Youth Solutions Report, and accolades from organizations such as Amref Health Africa and the African Union. She is also a YALIRLCEA and Youth Solutions Program alumnus. Driven by her own challenging experiences with menstruation as a teenager, Lucy continues to champion girls’ education, women’s economic empowerment, and improved access to quality menstrual health solutions across Tanzania and beyond.
